52100 was developed for ball bearings, not knives — it’s a high-carbon steel with about 1.5% chromium, enough to meaningfully improve wear resistance and hardenability without pushing it into stainless territory. We normalize it in three descending-temperature cycles before hardening, which refines the as-received grain structure enough to noticeably improve edge stability under lateral stress compared to a single normalize.

We run it mono-steel rather than pattern-welded because the alloy content that makes 52100 useful — chromium carbides distributed through the matrix — doesn’t etch into a visually distinct pattern against itself the way 1084/15N20 does against each other. What you’re buying here is the steel’s mechanical balance, not its face; we finish it with a fine stonewash rather than an etch for exactly that reason.
